Below is an example on the left of a thermogenic fat burner with a "proprietary blend". These blends are a brands way of under-dosing your supplements as they dont have to disclose the amount of each ingredient. All labels must be listed in descending order so the supplement company will usually start with the least expensive and most noticable ingredient, such as caffeine anhydrous. Once they "pixey dust" or "sprinkle in" the minimum amount possible of the more expensive ingredients, they then fill the rest of the capsule volume with rice flour or maltodextrin to make you think you have a full capsule of active ingredients. None of the active ingredients are at the correct dose to give you the desired results. Many will say they use blends to hide their "secret formulas", but in reality, any other brand can test in their labs to get the exact formula. YOU the consumer are left in the dark. You will find these blends in fat burners, BCAA supplements, joint care products, test boosters, etc. Also take note of the Titanium Dioxide and artificial coloring under "other ingredients". This is used to brighten capsules and has studies showing that it is a class 2B carcinogen that has caused cancer in animal studies, not exactly something you want in your supplements. Our supplements on the right use only clear vegetable capsules, with nothing else but clinical doses of the most studied active ingredients. To get the best results you should stick with supplements that use clinical therapeutic dosages of active ingredients and list the exact amounts, like the example on the right.
Also below is an example of a sub-par protein on the left and a quality protein on the right. Both charge about the same price but the left has a much lower protein value than the right. It is therefore a concentrate protein blend, which means less protein, more fat, more lactose and more sugar per scoop. There are a few other things to watch for in a proprietary blended protein. The first thing to look at is the fact that there are 4 different proteins listed, with "whey protein concentrate" listed first. This means there is more concentrate than any other source and can be up to 99.99% of the total protein in the product. You will also never know what grade of concentrate you are getting since they don't actually have to list it on the label. They do list other proteins on the label which is "label trickery". All whey protein starts out as a by product of dairy. The more fat, lactose, sugar, impurities, etc. that is filtered out, the higher grade the protein. Another problem with the left protein is the added amino recovery complex, which shows suspect of amino spiking. Amino spiking is taking some of your protein out of the container and replacing it with less expensive aminos like glycine, taurine, or creatine mono-hydrate, which is half the cost of protein but shows a much higher nitrogen. They save money, you lose out on protein. The third major problem on the left protein is under "other ingredients". Another way brands increase profit margins is by adding creamers and maltodextrin as FILLERS. This is sugar, fat and carbohydrates. All of this combined and you get half the protein you are paying for! If your goal is to put on size without putting on belly fat, you need to take a clean protein like the one on the right.
